RUN-OFF
‘
It’s Coming!!’
It’s coming up to that time of the year again. The ‘Wet Season’ which
is soon followed by the ‘Run-off’ and that means Big Barra
and in big numbers. Barramundi are caught all throughout the year in the
Top End, but nothing remotely compares to the RUN OFF which occurs from
March to June. This mind blowing period of the year is due to the wet
season and monsoonal rains. These cause the rivers to become swollen sending
millions of litres of water to inundate thousands of acres of flood plains.
As the flood waters start to recede into the Territory’s famous
river systems and feeder creeks, it becomes a smorgasbord of tucker for
the fish. Tadpoles, frogs, rainbow fish and mullet have been breeding
on the floodplains over the last couple of months and now become bait
for hungry Barra which migrate into the rivers and creeks to feed. This
is the main reason why record numbers and big Barra (40pound+) are frequently
landed at this time of year.
We offer fishing excursions to what we call the “Famous Four Rivers” in
the Top End. Shady Camp on the Mary River system (world renown for its
monster barra). South & East Alligator Rivers in Kakadu National Park
(there are only a select few guides allowed to operate in this world Heritage
listed park) and of course the Mighty Daly River (home to the Barra National
and Barra Classic). Two of the Territory’s largest fishing tournaments.
All Accommodation offered is air-conditioned, boasts inground swimming
pool, licensed bar and restaurant. It’s just what you need after
a day of ‘full-on-fishin’!
So if you’re looking for that rush of adrenalin, have a crack at
one of these big girls. She’ll make you go weak at the knees!
